Most of the equipment you require is will be supplied.

If you are under 18, I strongly urge you to learn how to play first without pads and gloves before you start out soft and stay that way.

If you purchase your own shoulder pads...you measure across your back from the shoulder joint to joint...not the outside of the muscle.

Have your helmet fitted to your head if you buy your own.

beyond that a 7 piece set (hip and butt pads, thigh and knee pads) are a nice purchase and so is a cup and supporter.

Your pads and uniforms will be supplied by the team. You will need cleats...check the internet for suggestions on type and brand.
You will need to purchase a mouth guard and set it to your mouth.
Some players will get elbow pads, but for the most part that is all you will need. Knee braces are a very good investment if you want to play for a while. Many linemen also use neck pads/braces that attach to the shoulder pads and keep your neck from going too far back.
Go to a top name sporting goods store and look around and ask questions of the staff.

It would also be helpful to know what age you are.

my first thought was a good head on your shoulders and knowing how to use it. Next thought was a coach to teach you how to use it. other than that a good jock strap so they don't know you got the balls to go all out because you know you will dominate. oh yea confidence in your ability.
