To play with your friends, all you really need is a football and possibly some spikes.

If you are going to play for your school team, all the major pads and your helmet are usually provided. The only equipment you would be responsible for is a mouthguard and your spikes. Some optional pads you might choose to get would be a neck roll (usually for linebackers or running backs, maybe linemen), rib pads (primarily for a QB, maybe RB), and some type of elbow padding or covering if you play on turf. Then accessory items you would be responsible for on your own, such as a sports belt, large socks or any type of underarmour/spandex, gloves, wristbands or visors.
