George Stanley Halas was one of the founders of the NFL, starting the now Chicago Bear franchise as the Decatur (Illinois) Staleys in 1920. The team moved to Chicago and became the Bears in 1921. Halas was a good football and baseball player. He was named the MVP of the 1919 Rose Bowl, and he played professional baseball with the Yankees that season. A hip injury ended his baseball career, but Halas continued as a player and head coach for the Staleys/Bears until 1930. His playing days ended after the 1930 season, and he also retired as coach for a couple of years. He returned in 1933, and was the head coach until 1967, taking a three year break to serve in the military during WW2 and another in 1956-1957. He finally retired from coaching in 1967-at the age of 73. In 40-plus seasons as a coach, Halas only had six losing seasons. "Papa Bear" Halas remained active in the running of the team until his death in 1983.
