ok i am planning on buying my friend an nfl jersey. i asked him the size he wears and he says an xxl (AKA 2xl). i asked what that would be in numbers such as 54 pb 56 pb etc... and i was told it was a 62 pb. i looked at what that supposedly means, and was informed that the number represents the size of the chest in inches. my friend is only 5 foot 8 or 9 inches tall and am hesitant to get a 62 jersey because i am ordering off the internet and the shipping cost is very expensive. so my question is, is the number really the length of the jersey, or have i been missimformed, and 62 is just fine for someone who is 5 foot 8 and wears baggy clothes?

62 is too big for anybody!! I'm 6'2" and I usually go for a 54 and I like baggy clothes. I'd say you get your friend a 52 or 54. If you want more info here's a sizing chart from Dick's Sporting Goods.
