What was the worst record in NFL history to clinch division?

I wanted to know if there ever was a 7-9 because the WESTS could do that.

no losing team has ever made the playoffs in a full season. the strike in 1982 had the lions and browns make it with 4-5 records. only counting the super bowl years of course.

The panthers I believe finished 7-9 a year or two ago and won their division. Prior to that, I believe an 8-8 Jets team won their division once.

The second guy is right about the only below .500 teams making the playoffs.

However, the team with the worst record to win the division is the 1985 Browns with an 8-8 record.

8-8 is the worst record of any division winner. We haven't had a 7-9 division champion, but its highly likely this year with the NFC South, NFC West and AFC West not being all that great. It's very logical that Seattle can finish 7-9 and win the West. Very logical that either Carolina, New Orleans, or Tampa can finish 7-9 and win the NFC South. San Diego could belly flop again and finish 7-9 and win the West. With this year in football, anything is possible.
