Greatest runningback in college football history?

???i say archie griffin(2 time heisman) ..u

Archie Griffin, no doubt. Very few know, not only did he win the Heisman his junior and senior year, he was on the podium his sophomore year. His number 45 is retired in the NCAA; he's in the NCAA hall of fame and set many records for his time. He was also named the United Press International Player of the Year, twice! A very big honor of the time. And...he won the Rose Bowl! Not to mention, he was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame. Often imitated, but never duplicated. Undisputed NCAA running back champ!

Barry Sanders.

i belive he ran for 2800 yards and 37 TD his senior year.

no one will ever come close to the 37 TDs. Report It

Can't go wrong with Barry, but Reggie Bush...it was sick. Lightning quick, ridiculous. Then again, 37 TDs...okay. Tough call. Report It

If i wanna' hear an echo i'll go to 'the shoe'.you wanna' ask rhetorical questions:who runs a cleaner program OSU or Michigan? Don't ask opinion questions & then vote for the one that best describes your opinion. How absolutely presidential of you! O,that's right Ohio..hmmm. Report It

Are you kidding me!?! I'll give you the two time Heisman along with all his other accolades. But Nobody touches Barry Sanders. Pick up a college football Almanac sometime, educate yourselves... Report It

Why don't I go ask a Notre Dame fan what the greatest Program of all time is?
"I think Notre Dame, what about you?"
"I do too"
"Oh awesome, yours is the best answer!!"
"We sure do ask smart questions." Report It

Herschel Walker of the Georgia Bulldogs

Too bad he never lived up to the hype of the NFL or the trade to the Vikings in which they gave up half the population of Minnesota to the Cowboys.

Griffin, OJ, Bo Jackson, Herschel Walker, Mike Rozier, Reggie Bush, L.Tomlinson, Barry Sanders, Tony Dorsett, Willis McGahee (one amazing year),Ricky Williams, Ron Dayne.........

O.J. Simpson

Ernie Davis, Syracuse. First Afro American to win the Heisman.

archie was good but he didnt desevere it the second time. He only scored four touchdowns his senior season but he was still amazing. But the real person is barry sanders as much as i hate to admit it. He wins hands down. Yes it was only really one season but his numbers are so unreal i doubt they'll be broken in only 11 games. he ran for like 2,600 yards (ncaa record), scored 39 td's (record), had over 3,200 total yards (record), and did this in only 11 games ( they didnt count bowl games back then). Plus he did all this behind a pretty good oklahoma state o-line. His worse game, he ran for like a 150 yards against texas A&M who had the best run defense in the country and return a punt for a td against them. Lastly, i think he is the only player to have like 2-3 100 yard kick returns for td's in a career.

This is simple Ron Dayne. He isnt that good in the nfl but you said college football history.

yes, Archie Griffin is the best NCAA running back of all time.

My favorite OVERALL running back of all time is Bo Jackson, for his ability to play the position in the NFL. Too bad he got hurt...maybe if he hadn't played stupid baseball...dammit!!!

GO BUCKEYES!!!!!!!!!1

GO GIANTS!!!!!!!!!

emmitt smith

If we are going by SINGLE year then it is CLEARLY Barry Sanders. If we are going by College Career then I don't pay enough attention to college to really pick a Career best but yeah based on numbers then Griffen probably would get it.

OJ, Earl Campbell, Herschel Walker, Barry Sanders, Billy Sims, Ricky Williams. It's too hard to decide. Even though they all won Heisman Trophies, I don't think you can say Archie is better because he won two. Heisman elections don't always pick the best player in college football. For example, Gino Torretta won over Marshall Faulk. That was a crime.

Marcus Allen. He was the first running back to rush for 2,000 yards in a season. In addition, his sophomore year he played fullback, leading the way for Charles White to win the Heisman in 1979.

That would all depend what your criteria for being the greatest is. If you're going with hardware, then yes,Mr Griffin would be the obvious choice. If say you went with stats then you might have to go with Hershel Walker or maybe even Tony Dorsett..that's very difficult indeed. I would go with more of a combined career College(production,post-season,and hardware) plus how he panned out @ the next level. Given that i would have to say..(drum-roll please)..man! this is really tough! Hmmmm..O.J.? Being a Buckeye fan you're probably wincing so i'll go with ..Barry Sanders. One of the all-time best all-round single seasons in NCaa history and the only trophy that matters(aside from the crystal football) and a monster nfl carreer that consisted of making a perenial league doormat into a consistent play-off contender. Imagine Barry on say the Niners or the Broncos..Forgetaboutit. Playing on turf thru-out his entire playing career must've surely had a lot to do with his decision to retire. That and 25-35 touches a game didn't help much either. Emmitt Smith couldn't hold Barry's jock. If they'd've switched places...we'd be talking about Barry like Hockey fans talk about Gretzsky or Hoop fans hail Michael. Instead he wore Honolulu Blue and silver for the worst team in the Nfl...Oops forgot about the Cardinals. Later...Go Big Blue! Don't even get me started on the new SI write on "The Program". Would we be having this discussion w/o that gift-wrapped National Championship phantom Pass Interference call that took place at My Sundevils stadium a few years back?..and if McGahee doesn't get hurt..Peace, wmcks03@yahhoo.com.

Barry Sanders, LT, Ricky Williams, Ron Dayne, Bo Jackson
