How many players from their favorite team can the average "fan" name?

What's your guess?

I'd love to break it down into subclasses of "fans"
but I'll stick with the question as it is.

How many players from their favorite team would you guess, the average football fan can name?

I'm going with about 9
I think there are a lot more casual and no-nothing fans than there are people who can name even every starter

College? I would say 7 is the most common number. There are some that could name 30+, and I would think just about everyone could name 4.

Most could name the QB, RB, a receiver or two, a couple on the defense, and a star lineman or something

The real question, is how many people on these boards could name players from OTHER teams that they have opinions about. Like, this team sucks. O really, what kind of players do they have, I dunno, that's just what Dan Wetzel told me.

I would guess it's closer to 6 as an average but that's taking into account the fans who know 1 or 2 players names. You know the ones....they think the team colors are pretty or they like the QB.

I would say around 7.

I'm not a die hard fan and I'm up to 10...without looking them up.

I'm gonna guess 5 or 6. Every team's got 5 or 6 "star" players, at least three on offense and three on defense. I think it's funny when people claim that they are a diehard fan, but can't even name half of their starters.

Bandwagoners- 1 to 2. The QB and Running back.

Casual fans- 4 or 5. Maybe 9.

Die hard fans ( like myself)- Can name almost every player on the team.

Being a Cubs, Bears, and Bulls fan, I can say I could probably name every player off the top of my head, save a few Bears that don't play. However, I'm pretty die hard. I would say that some women I know that only watch when us guys are watching could name about 6-8 Bears, 5 Bulls and 7-9 Cubs. These are obviously guesses, but educated guesses nonetheless. This is Chicago, however, and I would guess that other less sports centric cities would have a lower ratio.

Good question. I think you are close on the number, but I am a diehard fan of my team, and I can name most of the players on offense and defense, but I take a great interest in the guys and their accomplishments, and like to read biographies on the guys to see where they came from and went to college.

Well, the media hypes up skill position players on offense, and the leading tacklers and corners on defense...Notice that the O and D lines get left out?...I couldn't tell you every lineman on my team...just the way it is...An O or D lineman isn't gonna be the player of the game...Thank the media for that...

I dont know. I don't follow baseball at all but I can name a bunch of red sox players just because I hear their names all the time on the news. I'm gonna guess a little higher due to that, and say around 14-16 if they are the type that watches the news.

Great Question.....
people can't answer it because their favorite team changes every January! That is why I have so much respect for organizations like PIT, SF, DAL and GB. Love 'em or hate 'em, their fans are die hard and you will not find loyalty anywhere, in any sport like a pittsburgh steelers fan. The teams with the best support and loyal fans also have won the most rings...coincidence? I think not!

I'll bite, lets see,
Tom Brady
Randy Moss
Wes Welker
Ben Johnson
Kyle Brady
Kevin Faulk
Vrabel
Tedy Brushki
Rodney Harrison

Yep, 9. I'm pretty ashamed, and I'm going to study up!

Good question man. I dont think most of you give fans enough credit(not counting the bandwagon and fair weather fans). My guess would be about a dozen or so for true fans . They should know the QB, RBs, WRs, at least the main TE, the kicker, and probably a couple of the more popular defensive players. Im a hardcore fan of the Saint and Cowboys and cant name all the support players like the offensive linemen, but because Im a fantasy player also, I can name almost all the skill players. I think most fans will know most of the skill positions on their teams, even some backups. If they can name the C, OG, or OT then they are likely a fanatic.

Well let me see how many I can name, Tony Romo, Julius Jones, Marion Barber, Terry Glenn, Terrence Newman, Roy Williams, Terell Owens, Bobby Carpenter, Jason Witten and then there's 2 more that are on the tip of my tongue, the name of our kicker, and the guy that we signed this year and put him on our D-line... something Tank, or Tank Johnson, or something like that.

And I wouldn't call myself a diehard fan, but I wouldn't call myself casual either. So I guess the average would be about 9-11

the quarterback
the running back
one maybe two receivers
one lineman
one d-lineman
two linebackers
two db's
and if the kicker has been around for more than a year

so that equals 10 - 11 for me
plus the coach, but he's not a player!!

Hmmm...let me see...I'm a Jaguar fan...

1. David Garrard. 2. Reggie Williams. 3. Fred Taylor 4. Maurice Jones-Drew 5. Matt Jones 6. Marcedes Lewis 7. Ernest Wilford 8. George Wrightster 9. Tony Pashos 10. Kahlif Barnes (sp) 11. Brad Meester 12. Greg Jones 13. Josh Scobee 14. Adam Podlesh 15. Reggie Nelson 16. Mike Peterson 17. Marcus Stroud 18. Paul Spicer 19. John Henderson 20. Reggie Hayward 21. Bobby McCray 22. Rashean Mathis 23. John Broussard 24. Mike Walker 25. Gerald Sensebaugh

Well, I don't know if I'm an "average" fan, but I can name 25 players off the top of my head (I know more, but my mind's drawing blanks.)

Tom Brady
Donte Stallworth
Randy Moss
Wes Welker
Logan Mankins
Ben Watson
Kyle Brady
Kevin Faulk
Mike Vrabel
Matt Light
Nick Kaczur
Dan Koppen
Vince Wilfork
Russ Hochstein
Tedy Bruschi
Rodney Harrison
Asante Samuel
Junior Seau
Richard Seymour
Lawrence Maroney
Sammy Morris
Stephen Gostkowski
Matt Cassel
Randall Gay
Heath Evans
Roosevelt Colvin
Ellis Hobbs
Jabar Gaffney
Steven Neal
Jarvis Green
Larry Izzo
Lonie Paxton
Eugene Wilson
Ty Warren
Adalius Thomas
Marcellus Rivers

37 ... that's all I can think of off hand

You have those die hard fans, which can name at least 3/4's of the team and probably most of the coaching staff.

You got people who knows half of the players on each team, some because of fantasy sports, most because we grew up watching the games and knowing the players.

You got the Madden players who don't know anything about football, but can name players upon players just because Madden has each player.

Then you get those people who know nothing about sports at all. Sadly enough even they might know who a couple players are on their favorite team. Its usually the QB and the RB. Sometimes its happens to be the player who did something that caught onto the news.

For the average "fan" I would have to agree with your pick with 9. Most of the time they know their QB, RB, 2 WR's and the TE. Then on the DEF they know the MLB, a DL, and a Corner and Safety.

I happen to be the fantasy sports part, the watching and studying part, and the madden part...Not exactly normal. Naming all the players on the 49ers however is a bit harder.

Also your last statement...completely agree with. You don't find those people who can name every starter for their favorite team. Infact most die hard fans can't do that with injuries and what not now a days.

I do agree with you though.

Great question.

Good luck!!

Football.....9 sounds about good. I could probably name 9.

Though this may be true, I am a much bigger fan of baseball (I can name the whole Detroit Tigers Team off the top of my head, plus the bullpen). This may contribute to the reason I can't name many football players, lol.

10 players. I can name about 30 players of my fav. team.

I think it's like 7. The QB, RB, a couple of WRs, maybe the TE (if he's a big enough name), and a couple players on the defense.

This is a great question!

Cheers!

I think the average fan can only name the superstars/playmakers on their team. Forget the o-line and d-line period. I would say 7 or 8 for average fans.

Well, for the average fan, I would say only the QB, a couple of receivers, and the running back.
