Players thought to be too small at first but made it?

Who are some players that coaches thought were too small to play and be a good player, but wound up being good. (For example, Brees)

fran tarkington

Marvin Harrison and Jerry Rice.

That's all you need.

My favorite "little guy" is Sam Mills, former Saints LB

Sam Mills was a Pro Bowl linebacker for the Panthers and Saints (and the Stars of the USFL) and he was 5'9".

From espn.com.....

An undersized linebacker out of Montclair (N.J.) State who failed several times to catch on with NFL and Canadian Football League teams, Mills gave professional football one last shot when the USFL debuted in 1983. After Mills starred in that league with the Philadelphia Stars for three years, coach Jim Mora brought him along to the Saints in 1986.

Mills spent nine NFL seasons with the Saints, then joined the expansion Panthers. He finished his career with 1,319 tackles and started in 173 of 181 games.

Mills was elected to Louisiana's Sports Hall of Fame, and he's also a member of New Jersey's Sports Hall of Fame.

There is a statue of him outside Bank of America Stadium and he's the only player in the Panthers' Hall of Honor.

Bryan Westbrook showed last year that he can go between the tackles.

I'll have to agree that Sam Mills is the obvious choice. God rest his soul.

Doug Flutie, quarterback for Buffalo, San Diego and New England as well as the Canadian Football League and U.S. Football League. He was 5'10" and 180 lbs.

About half the guys on the Patriots.
the 1972 Dolphins and the 1979 49ers

Warrick Dunn the RB of the Atlanta Falcons

I believe Barry Sanders was originally told he was too small and would never make it to the pros.

There are countless examples of this - Emmitt Smith is the best one that I can think of. People said he was too small and too slow to make it in the NFL.... I guess they were wrong haha. Brian Westbrook and Warrick Dunn both were told the same things, and both have been productive.

Doug Flutie was very small for a qb, and he had a successful career.

Many people said Dwight Freeney was too small to make it as a defensive end in the NFL. He's done quite well for himself.

Steve Smith was thought to be good for nothing more than kick returning because he was a small guy. He's now one of the best in the league at wide out.

People said Johnathon Vilma was "small" for a linebacker (he's really not that small - I believe he's 230 something), and he's one of the best in the middle today. Roid rager Bill Romanowski was also said to be small. He was a nutcase tho - he got in fist fights with guys that had 100 lbs on him numerous times.

I think Zach Thomas is also pretty small (for a middle linebacker).

Pat Tillman was only 200 lbs, and he was a linebacker in college. He moved to safety where he was still a little small.

These are just a few I thought of off the top of my head. The list goes on and on. If a player uses his speed, agility, and intelligence, he can get away with being a little smaller than expected.

Maurice Jones-Drew.......now he is a little monster.....

Brian Westbrook and probably the whole o-line for the Broncos because they're all considered to be undersized.

warrick dunn, steve smith, doug flutie, and now garrett wolfe

Marvin Harrison, Jerry Rice, Doug Flutie, Warrick Dunn, and more recently Maurice Jones-Drew

Doug Floutie
