Am I the only one who thinks the "horse collar tackle" rule should be removed?

This past weekend Larry Johnson was injured by a tackle from behind, not "horse collared", but similar. The injury occurs only when the opponent lands on the legs or ankles. Injuries unfortunately are a part of the game. The horse collar tackle rule still needs to be more specific.

The horse collar rule is a good rule to protect the players, LJ was hurt during a routine tackle. The horse collar rule is specific and is there to protect players from potential harm.

not removed; maybe refined outside the tackle box.

yes you are the only one.

Not removed. I agree injuries are a part of the game but that doesn't mean the NFL shouldn't do things and have rules to limit or prevent them. But you're right the horse collar rule should be more specific and clear.

No, I think it is a good rule, players are so darn good today that if a guy was racking up yards on them they could make that tackle and take the runner out. You can see the damage occur when that tackle is applied.

but its already gone

the horse collar is pretty specific, you cant grab behind the players head inside of the pads, there have been a lot of leg injuries due to this tackle and it should be a penalty, if you see how their legs bend when they come down with their legs trapped underneath them, its pretty bad

Gee, maybe the NFL should go to flag football. Maybe to allow a player to be tackled the tackler has to have his body from the waist up in front of the ball carrier. Maybe every player should be required to play with knee braces and ankle supports. Maybe just change it to where if the tackler is within one yard of the ball carrier, he will be considered down. Maybe..........
Just play the game. It is violent, hard hitting, and just like our military folks, know the risks when they sign that contract.
Leave the horse collar tackle in place, and come up with a rule that no more rules protecting players be made.

I think the rule should stand. There are lots of other rules to protect against injuries--like grabbing a face mask. Do you think that should be removed, too? We'd have lose eyeballs flying all over the place.

I think it would be a great rule if it were called. How many times do guys get horsecollared and nobody sees it, or they see it and don't throw a flag? I also think the "facemask" penalty should be expanded to grabbing other parts of the helmet. It happened last week that someone had his helmet ripped off from the back and he kept running. Of course, that opens the door to players not buckling their chinstraps - which was also called once this year that I have seen. (Guys who don't buckle their chinstraps should be fair game though - that irritates me).
Also, I would like to see the rule expanded to college.

You're wrong about the injury occurring only when a player lands on the leg or ankle. TO's injury was the reason the rule was instituted and no one landed on his leg. The rule is needed, yet maybe needs to be better defined. I've seen horse-collar tackles several times over the last couple of seasons that weren't called.

It could be more specific but not removed

Removed?? It should be enforced in college as well. Horse collar tackles cause serious knee injuries especially on artificial turf. Even though most college games are played on grass, it should still be a penalty in college ball.

Great rule shoul be expanded to shirt collar and not just inside the shoulder pads.
