What workouts are good for speed training?

I have a son who is 8 years of age and he is going into his first year of football(full contact). He has all the footwork training, and he is very tough. He lacks in speed though. he needs a little help when it comes to speed. Anyone have any good tips.

One day of repeats and interval running per week. Four to eight 1/4 mile repeats. Run the repeats at 70 to 80% maximum heart rate and the intervals at 40%. Even if he has to walk to get down to 40% it's ok. Once it gets down to 40% then he can run his next 1/4 mile repeat at 70 to 80% MHR.
Get him a heart rate monitor and take 220 minus his age. Multiply that with .40, .70 or .80 to get his 70 to 80%.
It works. At 42, using that way to train, I can run 6.25 minute miles consistantly.

get a speed coach, they help in the long run

suicides realy help with quickness and overall speed

I go to a basketball court or a gym and do a bunch of them like about 4 or 5 every day

and 1/2 a mile it deff helps me

good luck!!

My dad was one of the fastest men I knew, and he always said you train for speed by running downhill. So, if you can get a bit of an incline (downward) and practice on that, it will increase your footspeed. Uphill running may actually slow you down, but will build strong muscles like you'd need were you a lineman or a running back.
