Why aren't there more big time non-conference matchups in college football?

I mean why aren't there more games like LSU/Virginia Tech this year or USC/Auburn and Ohio State/Texas

Ohio State tries to schedule in state schools, but one big time regional matchup each year. This year it was Washington, which fell on hard times, but next year it's USC, and in the next few they have Oklahoma and Miami coming up.(although miami doesn't look as exciting as it once did) The SEC for the most part doesn't seem to want to schedule the big non conference games, with LSU being the exception. They seem to have a big one and a kind of big one in tulane, each year. Florida doesn't play Miami or FSU anymore that I can see, and Alabama FSU just wasn't as exciting as it could have been. Also, Classic matchups like USC ND or Michigan ND aren't the same thing. Michigan Oregon this year should have been good.

I guess with all the rambling, I am trying to say there are a lot of good matchups, it is just the teams that are playing this season, and to a lesser extent last season, just aren't jiving at the same time.

When you play in the SEC that could be suicide considering the number of ranked teams in the conference.

All of the other weak conferences should though.

wth are you talking about? ls-who just played a tough non-conference game against a potent WAC team.

idk b/c they are some of the biggest and most exciting matchups of the year. but then again i cant complain b/c i am a buckeye fan. we had texas a year ago and in a year or two we play usc in a regualr season game. i would still like to see more of them

Most of the big conferences will schedule easy non-conference opponents because there conference schedule is already tough. Conferences in the Pac 10, Big 10, SEC, Big 12, ACC, Big East usually schedule easy teams to play in non-conference to pick up some easy wins before they start the harder conference schedule.

Anymore, if you can make it through the season undefeated, you can get yourself a BCS bowl bid (maybe even a National Title shot). Point being, no one can afford to play too tough of competition that they're not required to play in their conference.

I'd love to see it different. Bring on NCAA football playoffs already!

I agree....but you also have to factor in the fact that many big programs prefer home games for profit.......why play a home and away series when you can just fork up a couple of hundred thousand for a pattsy.....

and................oh yeah.

LSU played Va tech earlier this year.....Max power...

Too much to lose in college football. Most seasons if you lose one game the Title hunt is out of your hands. So teams like LSU that already have a brutal confrence schedule have nothing to gain from playing those games.

There would have to be more Independent teams like Notre Dame to be able to pick more big games like the ones have listed.

As for the teams in conferences you only get 3 out of conference games.
