There's actually a semi-scientific way to answer this question: compare the completely objective computer ranking to the totally subjective human poll ranking and look for the teams most of whack. I'm not saying that computers are perfect; they are only results-based and miss lots of factors that should be taken into consideration (e.g. key injuries). Also, computer methdologies require a lot of data points to be accurate, while most teams have only played 9 games so far - not a lot of data. But computer rankings have zero bias, while human polls reflect imperfect and prejudiced human thinking, which is where the biggest "mistakes" are made. For this purpose, let's compare the AP poll with Jeff Sagarin's computer rankings:

Hawaii: AP = 14, Sagarin = 40 overrated by +26
BYU: AP = 27, Sagarin = 44 overrated by +17
Virginia: AP = 23, Sagarin = 34 overrated by +11
Boise State: AP = 19, Sagarin = 28 overrated by +9
Georgia: AP = 10, Sagarin = 18 overrated by +8
Texas: AP = 15, Sagarin = 22 overrated by +7

Most Underrated Teams (AP < Sagarin)
South Florida: AP = 33, Sagarin = 17 underrated by -16
Florida: AP = 17, Sagarin = 9 underrated by -8
Cincinnati: AP = 26, Sagarin = 20 underrated by -6

To answer your question, yes Hawaii is the most overrated team in the human polls. And here's the numeric evidence to back up that assertion.

i still dont think oregon is getting enough respect. i know they are ranked high, but still no media talk about dennis dixon, or jonathan stewart.

overrated: ohio state. who have they played so far? purdue? penn state? those 2 schools never deserved to be ranked anyways. just wait until they play michigan. OSU lucked into 1st place and were lucky everyone ahead of them lost. you think ohio state can beat LSU or Oregon or even Florida? no way.

Kentucky is badly underrated. They face so many great defenses in the SEC in LSU, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, and Arkansas, and Bama aint bad either. UK doesnt have a great line and their defense is iffy and they still knocked off some good teams. LSU is not overrated, they just dont have a QB for crap.

Kansas is underated by far. So what we played easier teams early this year, Toledo is actually having a pretty good season. Plus, as the number 4 team in the country, you would think we would get more press coverage than about the crazy dude in the stands (his name is white owl by the way). If Corso and Kornheiser could get their heads out of asses of Ohio and LSU, they might actually pay attention to the team that is more than likely going to the NCG.

Undrated: Oregon or Michigan who hasn't lost since game #2.

Overrated: USC. How can you come into the season #1 and getting proclaimed as the "Best Team Ever" and lose to Standford at home.

Underrated: Oregon. My LSU Tigers and Oklahoma Sooners are getting all love for teams that have one loss but I think Oregon can beat both teams. The way LSU has been playing Oregon would probably kill them.

I also think Oklahoma is overrated too. How can you struggle against a one win team and lose to an unranked team and still be in the top 5?

Overrated: Any team in the SEC and Oklahoma. (They overrate the Okies every year. That's a given.)
However, the biggest overrate this year is definitely West Virginia. Have they even played a top 25 ranked team this year? Oh ya. South Florida and they lost. Jeez.

Underrated: Any team in the PAC 10. Why is that? Is it because they play later and no one on the east coast is up to watch them? I wonder how many LSU fans have watched Oregon play this year? They would kill you guys.

Hawaii is def overrated and that is why they will never crack the top 10 but the most overrated team in College football is Kansas...putting up 76 on a weak team like Nebraska is not an accomplishment...its classless
The most underrated team is Michigan (which I hate to say as a buckeye fan) but they have the potential to beat any big time team with that offense and for all those buckeye haters name another program in the country that has remained as consistent over the past 10 years (one blow out does not a overrated team make)

Kansas is way underrated (I'm a K-State fan just to let you know this isn't a case of bias). They really have a great defense and have a real chance at running the table and playing for a National Championship. Reesing is getting better every game and they have proved that they have two RB that can go for 125 and 2 TD any given day. If not this year, watch out for next year because all 11 defensive starters are coming back for the 2008 season.
