Help joining high school football team?

I'm a 6'1"-6'2" rising sophmore in high school. I want to play high school football next year but I've never played in any leagues. I weigh about 160 and I'm not very athletic, but I do backpack, take karate, and occassionally kayak. I'm not a fast runner but I'm not too bad in short distances. I need any help I can get with exercise routines, any positions I might be good at and anything other help I can get. I'm very determined to make the team next year and want to know what I can do in the 10 weeks of summer I have.

just to let you know I'm in 9th grade now, and I'll be in 10th next school year

Talk to a coach or player to find out if there will be any summer workouts or open weight room periods, go to as many as these as possible. On your own you should do some weight lifting focusing on leg and core strength (squats, cleans, crunches, back extensions), work on your stamina by distance running, and your speed by doing sprints. At your size there are many different positions at the high school level maybe linebacker, tight end, safety, or inside receiver. One of the hard things to do is get comfortable with getting hit and delivering hits, having been in karate will help but it is different when you get padded up. Finally work on your football IQ, it's a very mental game. One way is to play a video game version of football like Madden, so you can learn terminology especially focus on the routes of pass catchers and how different types of defenses work (blitzing, stunting, man coverage vs zone). Most of all have fun and enjoy being part of the team.

Well it sounds like you are strong so I would suggest possibly safety or tight end for you because you have good height at 6'1"

well the top factors in football for everone is

1. Size (height and weight)
2. Speed
3. Strength

you have a decent size for a sophmore for many positions..
with the info you provided I would be looking at
1. Tight End
2. wide reciever or Defensive back
for wide reciever you need some good speed...and good hands....for DB you can get away with not having as good of hands but you should have greater speed for closing.

now if you think you wont have the speed or hands for those two..If you are agressive enough you might try linebacker

ur de or a te im almost sure of it...try that out

Hey buddy, do not play TE like the others are suggesting. A tight end needs to be able to block and at 160, you're just too light. My suggestion for you would be to play wide reciever. I would start on a light weight lifting schedule so you can build your strength, as you would probably be trying out for the varsity going into your junior year. Also, work on your cardio. Start running and sprinting so you can build up your speed and endurance. If you can add on another 10 or 20 pounds, you would probably be a prototypical high school wide receiver. I played high school ball and the wide receivers who were 6 foot to 6'3" and weighed about 180 did the best.

TE is a good position for you. Run, do drills, weight lift alittle. Lifting is not the most important.

Don't fall into the area of thinking like a lot of other people. Everyone thinks you have to be big fast and strong to play football, but thats not the case. It helps, but football is all in your head, playing football, you will reach a point everday, where you will get so tired, you acualy stop feeling pain, you'll love that feeling, but it takes a while to get there, those are the time you look down, and see something at a right angle. You have to remember, it's not being able to hit someone and watch them fall over that makes you good, or courages, or strong, or fast, it's being able to fall down, and get back up, and it's not easy at all. I've been playing for 8 years, and the road is rough.
My advice, hit the weight room hard, it gets you stronger, and faster, which helps, and helps teach you the ability to keep going. You should be in the weight room every morining. In the weight room, you need to learn to be quick, not fast, quick. Everything has to be explosive. Also make a friend with someone on the team now, someone who is in the weight room, and has off season work outs, and have them teach you. As for a position, don't worry about it, your coaches will know where to put you.
One last thing, don't worry if you don't make Varsity, or anything like that, senior year is going to be the year that you'll know everything you need to know to succeed, and make it to varsity.

You are fairly tall and may find yourself at TE or SE. The majority of high school athletes concentrate on the large muscle groups. You should find a routine that works your core and legs as well as smaller muscle groups to really het ahead. Karate and kayaking are great. Spend just as much time on a floor mat working core as you do lifting. And lift using explosive routines such as squats.

Tightend i would guess if you can catch
