| European NFL Division? |

If the NFL was to expand to the EU, there would surely have to be a new division, perhaps of 5 teams, 8 divisions of 5 teams, 3 new teams in North America and 5 new teams in Europe, then it'd be equal on both sides and the NFL Post Season could be extended to 16 teams instead of just 12, no more bye weeks. |

Eh. I see the NFL as a North America thing. I would only really accept teams being added from Canada or possibly Latin America. A merger with the CFL would work for me. Europe is a stretch. Game times would be all over the place and it would be a mess. If they want an EFL, That's fine. But it should be two seperate things. |

Scheduling would be far harder to do with your proposed system. Also there would be no talent to be spread out to the new 8 teams. I think a verifiable next step for the NFL is to go to Canada and Mexico before Europe. It would be easier to manage than Europe even though Europe would probably ensure larger crowds. I like how the NFL is unique with a 12 team playoff. The Euro teams just aren't good enough. Look on the ratings for them on NFL 2005. Plus that would cause financial problems for both sides and they would never make the playoffs so it's just ruining the 12-team playoff. North American teams wouldn't want to play at north american teams and Vice Virsa. How about make a Euroasian league? Plus if a plane crashes in the Atlantic, bye-bye to one team! The hardest part about expanding franchises to Europe is supporting those franchises. The developmental league, NFL Europe was just disbanded because of heavy financial losses and lackluster attendance. How would you financially support franchises in Europe if no one attends? In reverse, look how hard it is for soccer to take hold in America. Some Europeans have embraced our game, but that was mostly in Germany. Let's also mention the heavy expenses that would incur from travel. Those are long flights across the pond and also much more expensive. Or how about viewership ratings? If the Green Bay Packers traveled to Hamburg for seasonal play, what time would that game be on American TV? Or how about the other way around for Hamburg fans? Expansion in North America is more plausible but merging with the CFL is unlikely. There are just too many differences between the Canadian game and ours. For instance, the field is wider and the end zones are twice as deep. The Goal Post is also at the goal line, not behind the end zone. They also have 3 downs not four. Would we just expect all the Canadian franchises to make renovations and adopt our rules? What then about football at the lower levels in Canada? Would their high schools also have to adopt our game? Mexico seems much more likely. The regular season NFL game held in Mexico City a couple years ago had a huge sellout crowd and research tends to show that Mexicans enjoy the sport. If they did put a team in Mexico it could work. I mean remember the San Fran-Arizona game in Mexico City? This game was aganist the two worst teams in the league and they packed like 102,000 people in the stadium. Imagine if they had an actual discent team there. The one word that NFL coaches hate most is DISTRACTION. NFL coaches hate travelling to Europe for preseason games because it is a distraction to their players. Getting jet-lagged is another problem. Flights being delayed due to terrorism, etc. is also a distraction. |
