Players and coaches. What do you think is more effective at stopping the run in youth football?

Defensive line lined up in the gaps or lined up head to head?

I should mention these players would be in leagues from 7 years old to 10 years old. Running a 5-2 and even a 6-2 defensive scheme.

You can do gaps to confuse their o-line since they are kids anyway. They usually just know to block what's in front, so if your guys hit the gaps they won't understand that (3 o lineman on 1 DL happens sometimes) and more than likely will leave a huge hole in their line for your LB to go through and wreck shop...... just have your LB's go for the kill.

Man on Man the entire game is too easy..you want to confuse the kids a little.

Teach your line how to do both though. Doesn't hurt to mix it up. Do Head up a few plays then mix in a DL stunt on em. Hit em with a few gap controls and bring the backers off the edge or something...mix it up.

When I did it, I just about tried to run an all out assault on the opposite team...blitzes and all. LOL the kids loved it because I made a play for each of them to get either a tackle or a sack or something.

I would run a 4-3 defense cover 2, generally works very well.

A defense that swarms to the ball is the best solution. You can stack the line in the gaps and still end up having the offense compensating by going around end. If the whole defense knows to get to the ball, that will help stop it best.

gaps

Lined up head to head. In the gaps, there's a 50% chance the O Line will be blocking you in the right direction, if that makes sense. Just my opinion. I'd say lining up head to head and crashing left or right would be better as a way to "trick" the O Line and stop the run behind the LOS.

I'm a former blue chip all state defensive end and linebacker and I believe if you shade the defense to the strong side they have a easier time finding the ball carrier. I would also run the 46 defense like the 85 bears in youth football because the Quarterback and receivers are not top flight yet. Have your strong side linebacker play up on the line head up on the tight end or tackle. In fact I would take my best athlete with the ability to play of blocks and put him in this position and let him dominate the person he lines head up on. I would play a basic shade defense with the rest of the front 7. I would allow my Strong Safety to be a rover and play in the box. This gives you 4 lineman a defensive/linebacker playing head up to the run side and 3 linebackers including the SS. If you are not able to stop the run this way then the other team is obviously better. You also should blitz the corners, safeties, linebackers and ends at least 75% each game. When I was in highschool my coach ran a play called "omaha". This play called for both ends to slice down the 5 gaps and the two linebackers to slide out into the 7 gap. If you have at least one quick end run this play because he will beat the tightend to the inside shoulder and be in the backfield to disrupt or better yet stop running and passing plays. Once I knock a fullbacks helmet off his head on a omaha because I met him head on in top speed as soon as he took the ball from the QB. A quick end will get to the 3 gap quickly on this blitz.

11 men in the box!

Gaps.. ..

at that age, you really need to worry about the pass. drop 1 deep, 2 on the sides. then run a 5-3 with stunts on every play. head up if you bigger, and gap the LBs. gap your line if your smaller, which will open pockets for your LBs.

Just put all 11 defensive players at the line to stack against the run. It's not like a 7 y/o can throw anyway.

line up man to man blitz your linebackers off the ends, practice getting the defense to swarm the ball carrier they are young so keep it simple

lining up in the gaps always causes a little confusion, especially when the kids are that young. Get em in the gaps and tell them to penetrate. getting intotheir backfield screws everything up. Running games are based on timing and penetration kills that. Don't be afraid to mix it up either. line head up sometimes as well. But always get penetration. When i was in youth football we used a 5-2 stack with the middle linebackers directly behind the tackles and would run blitz games with them. pretty affective

Lined up in the gaps

Play head up and let the LB fill the gap.
Play a 50 it's simple and basic. Very easy to teach.

5 down(ng,2-t and 2 de) 2 LB and 2 S and 2 CB.

Works ok against the option. Is very good against the I-formation.
