| What is a true freshman? |
I have heard the term while watching NCAA football? Is there a fake or false freshman...what does this term mean?? |
A true freshman is one who is in their first year of college... A redshirt freshman is someone who is on their second year of college (or sometimes later) but was not on the team in their earlier years... The NCAA allows each player one year to be on the team but not play in games, this is called being redshirted... |

someone who has just graduated from high school and is in there first year of college sports. other people are just freshman if they use a redshirt which gives them another year of eligibility for sports. A true freshman is someone that is in their first year of eligibility at college. Someone who was playing high school football the year before and is now in their first year of college. In most cases a player will redshirt their freshman year ( sit out that season to gain one more year of eligibility), because they won't get much playing time or injury. Jimmy Clausen is a true freshman, he didn't redshirt because he had a chance to start. USC's Joe Mcknight is another example. Wahiv4 is right on the money. There couldn't be a better answer so I'm not going to try. A true freshman means a loyal USC player |
