Should Appalachian State be in Division 1-A (now known as FBS)?

With Temple moving into the MAC this year, the NCAA put Western Kentucky into their spot in the Independent 1-A conference. Do you think the NCAA should have the winner of last years Division 1-AA (Appalachian State) be the filler team instead of W. Kentucky? No offense to the fans of WKU, but App St. did just upset a team who last year had the #1 ranked rushing defense.

Matt,
that is a good question. Let's see what happens with Appalachian State for the remainder of their season. I am certain some of the "correct" people are eyeing your program on this latest win; but, lets keep it in context - it was one win among many required for a successful season.

If for example Michigan doesn't lose another game and Appalachian State has a mediocre rest of the season, then the "correct" people will view the win as a fluke. If the opposite happens then the "correct" people may merely say it was time for Coach Carr to move on - either way without a very heavy win column at the end of the season App State may be provided with little respect. However, with a heavy win total and UM having what is likely to be mediocre year - App State will definetly have a case but they will have to fight for the respect.

Nothing personal, it's just the business of College Football.

Best to you!

No Western Kentucky is moving into the Sunbelt conference in 2008 or 2009 there are only 3 teams that benefit from being independent Army, Navy and of course Notre Dame.

no
and i dont think they want to

They do not have enough scholarship players. They can not play a season against D 1-A schools and be competitive. They played great Saturday,I give them credit. But that would not happen again if they played Michigan 200 more times.Just being honest.I'm a SEC fan not a Michigan fan so I'm not making excuses.

So someone is picking up that joke they call Temple. Seriously I don't think that Appalachian State WANTS to be in Division 1A.

I think there's a misconception that teams are promoted up by the NCAA from I-A to I-AA. That's not the case, the school itself decides whether or not it can make a move up. We (Appalachian) will probably move up next time there's another major I-A conference shift and there are openings in smaller non-BCS conferences (such as CUSA,). In fact, the NCAA has put on a freeze for any and all inter-divisional moves for those who haven't already started the process for the next several years.

The reason App hasn't moved yet is because of funding and facilities. We have to be able to afford 22 more scholarships in football, as well as an equal amount for women's sports to comply with Title-9. We'd also have to afford the increased travel costs which would come with a I-A conference. We're currently upgrading our facilities and raising more and more money for athletics.

no. non. nyet. nein.....................well, you get the idea!

I think App State has shown NCAA fans that they can play with the best and not only hold their own but win. So when the App State booster committees catch up with the football teams' abilities they should have no problem joining a tougher conference. I like to see people better themselves. I think we are ready for more inter-conference play. Great players are in all conferences. Unfortunately for some it is also about money... just like everything else.

it was luck at the end

NOPE

no

Why not

Appalachian State should not get in this year just for beating Michigan. They should get in if they win two more titles in the next three years. If they do move up it will not be to a BCS conference. By moving up they would lose there chance to be National Champions for many years to come. The NCAA should give a lower division a chance to have a national champion by having a three team playoff between BSD, Div I, and Div II. This would provide for more attention and money to go to these lower programs. I know somebody who plays for Appalachian State, but I still do not feel they should get a chance to play in BSD yet. The prime example of moving up and losing credibility is Marshall University. They won a Nat. title moved up and played fine for a few years. They even went undefeated, but because of there conference at the time (MAC) they were denied a BCS appearance. They then tried to join the Big East, but were denied and eventually joined Conference-USA. Now Marshall is a bad team which just blew a halftime lead against my WVU Mountaineers to fall to 0-2. This is why App. St. should not even want to join BSD.

WELL! you would NEVER know, after Pittman & Wells EACH, broke a 50 yd+ T.D. run on 'em! besides UM & OSU couldn't find a DEFENSE! last Nov. UM?
