Because that is the official name of the college. It's called "The Ohio State University." That has been the official name since 1878.
Granted, the NFL players like to stress the word "The" when they're on TV just 'cause, you know, it sounds really pretentious and all.

Because that is what the name of the school is, The Ohio State University.
It is the same with The University of Miami. Most people just say, "The U." GO MICHIGAN!!!! Ohio University in Athens, OH was founded in 1803. Ohio State was not created until later. Ohio State quickly grew, and since it is in the state capitol it became tied to the state government. However, Ohio U. always called itself "Ohio oldest university" or "the oldest college in Ohio". Eventually, Ohio State added "The" to the beginning of its name in order to show that it was more important.
So the official name of the school is "The Ohio State University" . Every official piece of business and the school seal includes the word "The". If you ever spend any time in Columbus you hear it all the time.
When football games started showing the players state their name and school in the 90s, a couple of Buckeyes said "The". It then became a sign of commrodery and pride for Buckeyes everywhere to say it while emphasizing the "The".
I think it was someone like Cris Carter who first started it, not positive on that though.
Besides, nobody says anything when someone says "The university of michigan" or "the university of Texas".
It's Buckeye pride, baby To the person above me... I...O And, they are correct. To the go Michigan person.....song for you.....
