Preserving a signature on a football?

I have a Penn State football, it's blue and white and it's not made of leather. I think it's vinyl. I won it about 6 years ago and the signature is starting to fade. It's never been used of course just sitting on a drawer in a bedroom. It was signed by Joe Paterno as I watched him sign it. It was some kind of marker. I need to know what, if anything, I can apply to the football to preserve the signature as it is fading. Thanks

Use a Sharpie and carefully trace the signature and never use the football ever.
